  • Happy Birthday, Princess Leia!

Yesterday was Carrie Fisher’s birthday and as I went to post about it on Instagram, I realized that I had illustrated Princess Leia many, many times. Which makes sense as I’m a huge Star Wars fan and the princess is one of the best characters. I have illustrated her in her famous gold bikini, with the hair buns, and on a Keep A Breast cast. I also have done a few caricatures of people as Princess Leia. I’m pretty sure this makes her my most drawn character!

Here are just some of my Princess Leia incarnations:

Here are a couple sketches I did years ago for a spot in Official Playstation Magazine. We went with the first option on the left 🙂

I didn’t know Polina when I was working at The Rock School because she was not in the academics program at the time. I saw her perform in the Nutcracker and in the hallways of The Rock School but never had a conversation with her. I was very affected by Polina’s story and even more disappointed by the outcome. How could anyone not be saddened by the loss of such a young and promising life? I was very upset as I heard the news about Polina two years ago, in the Rock Café alongside the other talented ballet students. It made me terribly sad.

I felt inclined to paint this in Polina’s honor and I presented it to The Rock School. It was one of the more difficult paintings I ever attempted for various reasons. I haven’t draw a realistic portrait in years, in fact I have spent my whole career trying to distort the human form. I also haven’t painted in oils for a while– except for the Keep A Breast casts that I work on at times. The painting gave me a reason to get my homemade easel out of the basement and actually paint. It was difficult yet rewarding, and I only hope that Polina’s family and the staff and students of The Rock School enjoy it.

The painting is currently hanging up in the Rock Academics classroom. Last year it was on display in the hallway by a little makeshift shrine near a large photo of Polina.

  • Tegan & Sara are AWESOME!

The Lego Movie has been out 3 weeks now- I have seen it twice so far and I plan to see it again soon. The movie was even better than I ever expected; it was funny, entertaining, visually stunning, and had a great story. I have been a huge fan of Lego since childhood and rekindled the love within the last few years when my wife got me a minifigure from Series 4 as just a little impulse gift in her ThinkGeek order. That one minifigure multiplied into 100s as well as a few dozen sets.

One of my favorite parts of The Lego Movie is the soundtrack, including the song “Everything is Awesome” by Tegan & Sara featuring The Lonely Island. I have been a big fan of T&S since their album “So Jealous.” It is one of those albums I can listen to on repeat. My wife got us tickets to see Tegan & Sara on my birthday years ago- possibly the best birthday present ever! We met them after the show and I gave them my original painting. Since then I had gone back into the scanned version of the illustration and updated their hair and tattoos.

I also added other elements that better convey my original idea: to have T&S as sea sirens luring ships to the rocks. I think part of the idea came from their song “So Jealous” where they sing about the ocean. The other part is that their music is so beautiful, yet sad. They rope you in with their voices but you crash on the rocks of the gloom. Something like that. The ironic thing is “Everything is Awesome” is such a happy and upbeat song which is very far from their usual sad songs. I hope The Lego Movie brings them a lot of success as Tegan & Sara are awesome!

Good luck tonight, Jimmy Fallon! Erin and I went to NYC to see Late Night in 2010, it was great fun and The Roots were awesome! I gave this caricature to a stagehand who said he’d give it to Jimmy… still waiting for my Thank You card, Fallon! haha
